Poor Bo

Bo had a very "ruff" day today. To start off the day I had a wrong number on my cell phone at 7:30 a.m. The sound of my ringing cell phone woke Bo up, much earlier than he usually gets up. Needless to say he was a bit cranky. Bo and I just snuggled together in bed until 8:30. Yup, I have given up on him sleeping in his crate. For most of the night and especially in the wee hours of the morning, Bo usually sleeps curled up next to me. I'm actually getting used to him sleeping in my bed. The other night Bo was sleeping very nicely in his crate, like a good boy. I went to bed and woke up about 1 hour later and was freezing. (I'm not used to sleeping by myself yet) I was cold and already had about 5 blankets on me. I knew that Bo was sleeping soundly in his crate, but I was a bad Mommy and got him out of his crate and put him in bed with me. He is a good snuggler, so I warmed up quick.

Anywho back to Bo's "ruff" day. At 8:30 we got up because Bo had his 12 week check up this morning with the vet, complete with shots. As soon as we got to the vet Bo started shaking and acting all scared. He was really good, but didn't stop shaking for one minute, he kept looking at me with these sad little eyes. The vet gave him his 12 week shots and the shot so that he is protected against kennel cough for when Bo is around other dogs. Bo got two shots, and a thermometer up his little bum and he didn't even cry once. He was such a good puppy. The vet told me to watch for possible reactions, but since he didn't have any last time she figured he would be ok. She did tell me that where the shot was given he would have a 'little' bump and it would be sore. I told her to have a good weekend and then we left.

About an hour after Bo's shots we went to Sarah's house to help her ship out CD's. I took Bo with me so that I could watch for any reaction. Sarah also has a puppy a beautiful Poodle named Miah. She is lots bigger than Bo but I figured that they would play ok together. Miah wanted to play really bad, but Bo kept coming over to me and jumping on my lap. At first I thought it was because he was just scared because Miah is so much bigger than he is. Finally after a while Bo warmed up to Miah and they started to play. After a while I put Bo in his crate so he could rest since he had been up so early. He didn't make a sound, not one little peep. That is very weird for him since he isn't a huge fan of his crate. He slept for a while, go up, sat on my lap and then we left.

Once we got home Bo ate his lunch and then about 20 minutes after threw everything back up again. At first I didn't think much of it, sometimes he eats to fast and then pukes. Then I got to thinking that the vet said throwing up was one of the reactions he could have. So me being the worry wort that I am, I called the vet. The vet I go to is awesome and they are always so nice. Anyways, they told me that it probably isn't a reaction to the shot because it was over 2 hours. They told me I could bring them in if I wanted to but that Bo would probably be ok. I decided that I wouldn't take him. No sooner did I get off the phone I went to find Bo and he was just laying on the floor staring at the wall. I called his name and he didn't look at me. I went over and picked him up and he started crying and howling like something was hurting him. We sat down on the couch and I started to pet his back. All of a sudden I ran my hand over the spot where he got his shot and there was a huge bump. I felt the bump earlier but it wasn't as big. This time it was the size of a ping pong ball and it was hot. I picked him up and off to the vet we went again.

Bo cried the whole way in the car. He usually likes music in the car, but nothing was working, he just wanted to sit on my lap. We got into the vet and apologized for probably being stupid. They told me it is fine and not to worry about it, because it is better to be safe than sorry. The vet came in and looked at Bo and told me that it was a good thing that I brought him back because he was having an allergic reaction to the shots earlier this morning and that he was starting to swell up. She gave Bo two shots in his legs. One was a shot of Benadryl and the other was a shot of a steroid. Bo also has to take an oral steroid for the next week until the shot has worked it's way totally out of his system. This scared the bejeesies out of me. Bo was crying in the office and I was about in tears myself. (I really don't know how much more 'drama' I can handle in my life) The vet told me that we caught the reaction in time, before it became a very serious situation. So poor Bo had 4 different shots today. The ride home Bo just kept looking at me with the saddest puppy eyes I have ever seen. As soon as we came home we both crawled into my bed. Bo slept on my chest for most of our two hour nap. When he woke up he was feeling much much better and the bump and started to go away.

Needless to say I'm glad I was a worry wort about this situation. Who knows what would have happened to sweet little Bo if I had waited much longer or not have taken him at all.

Here he is sitting with my sister still looking like he doesn't feel good.

I'm feeling better, but still not great.

I've been through a lot today...I need to sleep. (He wrapped his self up in the blanket, I didn't not do that.)

Poor Little Guy!! He is so cute and those puppy dog eyes are just so sad. Good thing you are so attentive and took him back to the vet. I would be lost without that little guy too. He looks like such a little lover. Hoping that today is a better day!!

Way to be such a good and attentive Mommy to little "Bo" - and I love that you let him sleep with you.

I've been following your blog since you wrote on "Bring the Rain" and I've gotten goosebumps reading about how God is moving in your life and the friends that have entered into your life offering such amazing support.

I've never gone through something so difficult, but the trials I have endured make me realize how desperate it would be if I didn't have Hope. I echo so many of the 49 comments... keep asking questions (He'll be faithful to answer!), stick close to those good friends that are offering hope, and if along the way, you find a Christian that offends you, please don't judge Jesus and God's plan for you by their actions....

I just shared your story with my husband and he got goosebumps too. Blessings to you, my blogging friend-

We're so happy that Bo is ok. Nuby is anxiously awaiting his arrival.

I'm trying to finish de-germing my house and I got sucked into catching up on all your comments.

Kind of make my heart swell. Just wanted to say again how proud I am of you.

I sometimes wonder how I'm going to react when I have kids if I get all worked up over how my doggies are doing when they go to the vet!

I remember the last time Cinnamon had to have blood drawn. He too was shaking and when the vet took him to go to the back room to do the draw, he looked at me like I totally betrayed him. A few minutes later I heard him cry out from the stick. I teared up. :`( When the vet brought him back to me, he crawled up in my arms and laid against my shoulder, just as if I were cradling a baby against me.

Good thing you were watching him. Most times they don't have reactions, but there's always a chance that they could. Glad Bo is feeling better.

Glad Bo is feeling better! As a vet, I know how scary those reactions can be! I am so glad you have a great vet for your doggie baby. They will probably premedicate him with Benadryl in the future when he gets vaccines. Give him lots of love, and an extra kiss from me!

That's so weird that your Boston Terrier had a reaction, too. My friend's Boston Terrier went to the vet for her vaccinations and she had a bad reaction, too. She had to stay the afternoon for observation. She was very lethargic and wouldn't respond when called, either. Very scary when your bebe gets sick. :(

I'm glad you caved and let him sleep with you. Me and my bebe love to snuggle under the covers. Mine LOVES the electric blanket. Although I'm sure you have one living in Michigan. I keep one on my bed year round and I live in Louisiana! ;)

It's tough when your four-legged furry babies get sick b/c they can't tell you what's wrong. I have a cat that has reactions to his vaccinations, so they give him a shot before the vaccinations to counteract the reaction. Hopefully the vet noted the reaction in Bo's chart & will give him something the next time he has to get shots.

I love that Bo wrapped himself up in the blanket! I had a great dane/shepherd mix who I "smartly" allowed to sleep in bed with me. She wasn't so much of a fan of covers, but slowly throughout the night I'd notice she'd creep her way up from the foot of the bed...until she was finally sharing my pillow! Dogs are so funny sometimes :)
