Sick Bo

I think I must have the worst luck EVER!!!

This is going to be short because Bo is sleeping on my lap.

Little Bo started getting sick-throwing up last night around 8:00. He threw everything up twice. Then right before we went to bed last night he had the worst case of diarrhea. It was so gross. I didn't really think anything of it. He jumped up onto the couch and got a piece of my salad so I thought it was just that. So off to bed we went.

Bo usually sleeps really well during the night. Last night he was up and down pacing my bed all night long. This morning he crawled up on to my chest, yawned and puked everywhere. All of my bed, me, and him. Freaked me the heck out. I took him outside to go potty. He only peed a tiny little bit but then when he was peeing watery poop literally started spraying out of his little but. Then he went poop but once again it was all diarrhea.

I came in and called an ER vet. My mom and I took him in. The vet was horrible (more on that later) she was so mean and condescending to me. They gave Bo a shot to make him stop throwing up and stuck some saline bags under his skin to help hydrate him.

We came home around 11:30, he played for a while. Around 12:30 he fell asleep on my lap it is now 2:40 and he is still sleeping on me. My poor baby.

Do you all think this is normal or should I be even more worried than I already am. The ER vet said would be fine and just to go to my vet in the morning but now I'm worried because he isn't acting like is usual crazy self.

His nose is cold and dry if that means anything, however earlier it was wet and slimy so who knows.

Can you all just say an extra little prayer for him today? I would greatly appreciate it.

I will update more later.

Jen...I just found you via My Charming Kid's comment section. My eyes are overflowing with tears. Amazing to me how something made you start this blog - and how it offers you so much of what you need - and you had no idea. I pray for 2009 to be one of peace, strength, and new joys...how blessed Shawn was to love you for his life.

Tim Russert once said to a man who lost his 17 year old son, would you rather have never had a son or had your son for 17 years...of course the man said he would never exchange those 17 years for anything. I think about you two...how blessed you are to have had the years/memories and life you have had.

All this aside, this sucks. Take care of Jen...and know if you are ever in Oklahoma, a glass of wine awaits you! PRAYERS - K8

My dog occasionally gets diarrhea and it usually clears itself up in a day or 2.

Also- if she eats anything that she can't fully digest (ie grass, bits of sticks, plastic bits of toys, bits of rope from those rope toys, etc) she usually throws it up right around 5am. I think it sits in her stomach most of the night and then because it can't be digested she throws up.

I think you can easily wait for your own vet (call in the morning and ask if they think you should come in). But if it was me, I would give it 48 hours and if he wasn't eating, still throwing up and/or having diarrhea, then I would go to the vet.

Every vet visit is expensive- so I usually only go if it's an emergency or if the issue doesn't clear up in a few days.

Just think if it was you- if you threw up and got diarrhea, would you run to the doctor ASAP or would you give it 24-48 hours and see if it cleared up?

Hope Bo feels better soon!

Everytime I come by to visit you I cry. I am so touched by your open honesty. You have faced trials that would break most people yet you continue to share and show strength.
I'm sure you have down days but you are so willing to share them here.
Thank you for opening your heart. As each of us face trials in our own lives we draw strength from each other.

Poor little Bo! I know how stressful it can be to have a sick doggie.

One of my dogs had a really bad case of diarrhea a few years ago. It lasted a few days, and it was pretty gross. But she recovered - they ended up giving her an antibiotic in case there was something in her system.

I hope Bo gets to feeling better!

Hey Jen! I'll be thinking about little Bo. Ellie throws up quite a bit if she gets into any food she isnt supposed to. I think their little bellies just get upset so easily. I hope its nothing & I hope you get some good news at the vet tomorrow.

Poor little guy. Hopefully it's just a bug and is something he can kick with a little time. I know that they say when their noses are dry that they are dehydrated but I think sometimes its just a cycle, or at least it seems to be that way with our dogs. They will drink water all day and still occasionally still have a dry nose. I hope he feels better soon.

I was comforted to know that you too had a bad ER vet experience. We have been twice with our dogs and both times it was not a good experience, they were able to help but were so rude in the process, it's a bummer and shouldn't be!

Do you remember if he might have got into anything? My mom has shih-tzus and I cant tell you how many times we've made after hrs er trips for the same thing. Usually we've found they ate something they shouldnt have. If thats what has happened it should clear itself up w/i a day or two, little dogs usually have sensitive tummys to begin with. For sure call your reg. vet and follow up w/ him though. I hope Bo starts feeling better soon! Give him some smooches!
Hope you have a good week!

Poor baby Bo! I hope he feels better! Did he maybe eat something he isn't used to? If he normally eats table food, sometimes something will upset his little tummy even if you think it won't, given what he normally eats. My Meema's dog eats chocolate, steak, etc on a regular basis, but if he even smells turkey, he's super sick. Hopefully, that's all it is, especially since he's just a puppy. Can't wait to hear how he is!

A few months ago my boston got super sick. She threw up all the time and had diarrhea that she couldn't control. We took her to the vet and she ended up on antibiotics. After a couple of days on them she was as good as new. If I was you I would def. take Bo to the vet on Monday if he isn't better by then. Also remember that Bostons are extremely "emotional" dogs. When they aren't feeling well the only thing that they want is to be held by their mommy! :) Good luck!

I hope Bo feels better. I would wait and take him to your vet. If you did not like the ER place I would take him to your regular vet on Monday and they can help you more. They know your dog also. Hugs to Bo.

Hi Jen,

I have never commented before, but have been reading your blog for the last couple of weeks and felt compelled to comment regarding your sick Bo (even though I don't like dogs and have two myself - they're my husband's though - :o)) When our dogs used to get sick like Bo, our vet would tell us to feed them a 1/2 cup or so of rice and then gradually add cooked burger (we used deer burger since it was less fatty) after a day or so. My husband said that our one dog used to get "whip worm" and those were the symptoms - although he's not saying that is what your dog has. If all else fails - try the rice and then rice & burger. Best of luck and please keep us all posted! Take good care of yourself too! {{{HUGS}}}

Praying for little Bo. I know that little guy is your world...hoping he is feeling better soon.

I pray that Bo will get better soon! Since his nose is dry, you should really try to get some water into him. Use a medicine dropper and squirt it down his throat if he won't drink it voluntarily. He's probably going to be okay since he's asleep on you. If he starts breathing hard or wondering off to be alone, get to a vet stat.

Awww.... I have no idea on pets, I'm so sorry, I most definitely will be praying for BO.

We've been there! I've been reading your blog for months...and haven't posted. Don't really know why I haven't. You've inspired me to love my husband and children more than I thought I could!!!

My poor nephew Bo! Tell him Aunt Jennie, Uncle Chris and his cousins are thinking about him.

As I know nothing about dogs, I would say go with your gut. It hasn't failed you yet.

Hi Jen.

Let me apologize first, because this comment has little to do with Bo, although I did add a special little prayer for him tonight.

It was great to meet you today at Applebee's. The thought had crossed my mind as I read through your previous blogs, as to whether or not I would come into contact with you in this quaint little city. It was wonderful to finally get the opportunity to meet someone who I have been reading about and praying for ever since I discovered your blog. I hope that you are enjoying your new journey, and your journey through getting to know and love God. I am thrilled that you met Sarah. She is an incredible person, and I believe it was God who brought that meeting together. Thank you for sharing your story and showing us all what it means to have faith, unbridled love, strength, and determination to overcome.

Hope to see you at church and I hope Bo feels better. I'm sure that it's just a case of an upset tummy and he will be back to himself in a day or two.

Take care and God bless you.
Jen

Dry nose usually means dehydration, which is probably from the diarrhea. I will say a prayer to St. Francis (the patron saint of animals).

Take care!

Watch out for parvo- it is a deadly disease! Puppies commonly get it because their little immune systems aren't up to par yet. If you've given him the correct vaccines for his age so far you should be protected. Puppies do get upset stomachs every now and then, but they get dehydrated very easily. You're right to be worried, but just go to the vet ASAP and they'll fix him right up. Good luck!!!

Poor little Bo! I hope he is feeling better! That is so sad when pets are sick!

Oh poor little Bo!!

I wouldn't be too worried about his sickiness though... my dog goes through bouts of diahrrea on occasion. Usually the vet will recommend a bland diet to settle their stomach (did they tell you this?) because it's usually a reaction to something they have eaten. We have put Kino on boiled chicken and plain white rice for a few days a couple of times and it seems to help :)
Hope he gets better soon!! :)

Oh shoot I am sorry. Parvo virus crossed my mind. But I trust you will go with your gut! Please take him in if you are at all worried and know we are praying for you and little Bo right now. Stay strong and let us know how he is!

I hope the vet had good advice for you today. My in-laws give their dog Imodium (sp?) when their dog gets diarrhea. Praying that Bo gets better soon!

I've been reading your blog for awhile now. I've never known what to say though. You've been through so much, and are still so strong. You are amazing. I hope Bo feels better, asap!

Hi!
How is Bo today? What did your vet say?

Astraea said...

I'm so not an animal person, so I have no sage advise. I would say go with your gut. If that doctor didn't make you feel at ease, I'd take Bo to your regular vet. Better safe than sorry, right?

I just love your thumbprint charm. It's gorgeous. You continue to amaze me.

Jen,

I wanted to let you know of a few things that dogs should avoid. As most of us know, dogs shouldn't eat chocolate. But also, they shouldn't have onions or garlic, raisins or grapes. The raisins and grapes can actually cause their kidneys to shut down.

I'm glad Bo is feeling better. Don't worry about having taken him to the ER. Pets, for many of us, are our babies, and we learn by experience. It's no different than a new mom taking her child to the ER because he has an ear infection or a high fever. Same same. You live and learn. No one ever said that the wisdom we gain through experience would be free.

Also, I'm so glad Bo is there to get you through these times. My older dog can bring me such comfort when I'm down.
