Now on to a very special little boy.
As many of you know one of my best friends is Jennie, she has been on of my rocks since the second we found out that Shawn passed away. Her entire family has been huge to me, I really don't think I would have gotten through any of this without Jennie, her family, my family and all of my other friends as well.
However, Jennie's little boy is doing something extra special for Shawn at school. Devin was only four when Shawn died, but the two of them were buddy's. Devin knew that Shawn died because his "heart was sick" and he knew that Shawn went to live in Heaven. When Devin would come to our house Shawn and Dev would play ball outside and talk about NASCAR inside, the two of them got along very well. If you would like visit this link and read about a conversion that Devin and I had about Shawn about six months after his death. (It's at the bottom of the post) http://taleoftwocoins.blogspot.com/2009/02/6th-months-and-conversation-with-great.html
This weekend I was in Ohio for a quick weekend trip. Yesterday morning Devin showed me a piece of paper that was sent home from his school. Its was a letter and donation card informing the parents that their class and school would be participating in the Jump Rope for Your Heart program through the American Red Cross. This is a program that educates children about heart health and what you need to do keep your heart healthy. It also teaches the children how they can help others with heart related problems. While Jennie and I were reading over the information we noticed that each child can jump in honor of someone. It was Devin's idea to jump rope in honor of his friend Shawn Coin. I can not begin to tell you how excited he is about doing this for Shawn.
Last night Devin and Jennie sat down at the computer and designed Devin's web page for the program. Jennie told me that as Devin was telling Jennie what he wanted his web page to say he started crying because he wants to be able to help other people who have "sick hearts" and that he isn't going to give up because he wants to do this for his friend Shawn.
Last night Jennie and Devin wrote this on his page:
"Devin learned about heart disease when a close family friend, Shawn Coin, passed away at the early age of 31 due to an unnoticed heart condition. Devin was four years old then, but was very curious about why Mr. Shawn's heart was "sick". Two years later, he hasn't forgotten and still asks frequently about everyone's heart status. Devin has made it his mission to make sure that everyone he knows takes care of their heart to the best of their ability. He is very excited to be able to have the chance to help others by raising money in the Jump Rope for Heart.
Please help Devin's big heart reach out to help other hearts! He's got enough passion and energy for us all to make this a success! His goal is $50.00 and he's already half way there. Jenny Coin, Shawn's wife, has already donated half of his goal!"
Please visit Devin's web page and consider giving a donation to him. Devin's original goal was $50, but in just 10 short minutes of him page being online he reached that goal. His new goal is $200 and he is just about there!! He is so excited about this!! Once you go to his page you can see that there is a thermometer showing how far he has to reach his goal. There is also a ticker saying who gave what and in what amount, this is a fun way for Devin to see who is helping him reach his goal.
I'm not just saying this because I'm Shawn's wife and this is very close to my heart. However, I think this is a great way that we can all come together and help a six year old little boy who cares so much about other people that he wants to jump in his school gym in honor of his friend Shawn.

Thank you so much for the post. Devin is overwhelmed with emotion about finally being able to help hearts in a way that he can. He might not be able to do research or experiments, but he can jump. And in his words, "I won't give up jumping, Mom, cause I'm doin' it for Shawn Coin's heart!"
You wouldn't believe how excited Devin was this morning when I told him that people had already donated to help him help hearts! And, I just moved his goal from 200 to 300 because we're only $20 away from $200.
As his mother, I couldn't be more proud of him at this moment. Such passion and commitment to a cause that is so much bigger than him. And, he's not afraid.
Absolutely! Btw, you're at $200 now cuz I just got you there. I remember doing Jump Rope A-Thons when I was in middle school, so boy does this bring back memories. I hope you guys reach $500 or more!!!
Jen,
I have been "stalking" your blog for a while and you are such a strong woman that I have to keep coming back for inspiration. I found what Devin is doing for Shawn(and for many many others) through another blog. (I am bored at work at lurk LOL) And I had to give. Just a little, but if everyone gave just a little think how far that would go. I normally don't but knowing your story and seeing how big and special this little boy's heart is I couldn't NOT do it. Thank you for being who you are and letting all of us "into" your life. Take care and I will say an extra little prayer for you right now.
I dont yet have my blog up and running but I will soon and hope to "see" you there.
Renee
what a cool kid...my boys are doing jump rope for heart too....so I will donate through them, but will be thinking about shawn as i write the check! :)
Just reading that made me start crying. If not for heart research I never would have known my beautiful grandmother who passed away this past November. I will be donating to Devin later tonight.
Wow, that is so awesome! I will definitely donate. Sadly, I'm going to a funeral of one of my Dad's best friends tonight who died at age 57 of heart disease.
I'm so sorry I missed your call on Saturday! My phone battery was dead all weekend, so I never even saw your message until Monday morning:(
Thank you all for your "heartfelt" donations. I am in awe!
And,Elana....we are now only $20 away from $500!!! Or, as Devin calls it, Fifty hundred. hahaha.
Come check out his new video upload!
I have been reading your blog for over a year now, and this post may have hit me the hardest... What a tribute to your dear husband! I am sure this makes YOUR heart so happy to know that Shawn's life touched a young child in such a profound way. May God bless you all.
A Jen, what a sweet, sweet boy Devin is. Jennie sure has a special little boy.
I will have to send my thoughts instead of a donation though, we're on a tight budget with only one salary with a family of five. I would donate if I could though.
Nice to hear from you Jen, I've missed you!
